Smile
Each time you wash away
you push the day’s lies,
into somewhere deep.
And this is what you told
yourself you showed the girl,
another justified:
Heal over what she didn’t know
the scar in your smile, cuts her deep when you kiss,
another star in your pride, for the pain you dismiss.
I was never gonna be shallow in that place,
so the days all sing for you,
for everything you profess to be,
forming patterns in your mind,
that we know you never saw.
What about the wasteland
all the forgotten whispered lies,
and hate, the burning scratches,
which you sure deserve to feel?
She listens to the hollow beat, and knows there was a soul,
but it’s buried beneath her lover’s feet, below the lie you told.
The scar in your smile, cuts her deep when you kiss,
another star in your pride, for the pain you dismiss.
Fade it back to yesterday,
and all you tried to kill,
with only water and desire,
to be a word upon the page,
hush now, the fever
of the night brings her closer,
and as she reaches out,
you smile shows you cannot see
her living amongst the spaces in between
divulging in forbidden dreams,
that wasteland which you made,
gleaning pain from what you shun, drowning as you heal.
